It’s true that braces were once the territory of uncomfortable teenagers but these days adults make up nearly half of all orthodontic patients – in fact numerous celebrities have been sporting them too. For anyone looking for the perfect smile it’s never too late to get it, as you can correct your teeth at any age with very little hassle and fuss. The discomfort of the old style braces is now long gone and the new options are much more attractive, lightweight and easy to wear.
Metal braces are probably the most similar design to the old style of braces, however, thanks to modern innovations they are much easier to wear and look after. The brackets are a lot smaller than previous versions and there are multiple colour options available when it comes to the ligatures too.
Ceramic braces tend to be a more aesthetically pleasing option for adults than metal braces and they are ideal for straightening misaligned and wrongly angled teeth. These braces are made of ceramic alloys with the option of either clear elastic ties or white metal ties. As these braces blend into the colour of the teeth of the person wearing them they are much less noticeable – a great option for anyone who wants to take the more subtle approach.
Lingual braces are another ideal choice for anyone looking to avoid visible braces, as these are attached to the back of the teeth, rather than the front. These braces are designed for teeth that are misaligned, crooked, or badly angled – they usually take around 18 – 36 months to correct.
Clear braces are essentially clear moulds of the teeth that align and straighten almost invisibly. Once the mould is created, the sets are used for roughly three weeks each and then a new mould is provided to progressively straighten the teeth. There are no brackets or wires and the braces can be easily removed when eating. Brands include Invisalign, who specialise in clear removable teeth aligners, which can be used as an alternative to traditional metal dental braces.
Damon braces look a little like traditional metal braces but don’t use rubber bands. Instead, they have a sliding mechanism to hold the wires in place, which means the braces are much more comfortable and easy to wear. There’s also no need for the tightening procedure that most orthodontic patients find uncomfortable and painful.
Inman Aligners are one of the fastest teeth straightening treatments around with results in just 6-18 weeks. The Aligners are formed of two ‘bows’ of Nickel Titanium coil springs that gently oppose eachother, gradually pushing the teeth into the right alignment. The design means that the device works over a much larger range of movement than other methods and so its effects are faster. Inman Aligners are usually worn for around 16-20 hours a day.
