Mouthwash: What Are The Benefits?

There’s no doubt that brushing and flossing your teeth are the foundations of great oral health, as well as ensuring that you avoid problems like bad breath and gingivitis. However, when you also start using mouthwash then it’s like super boosting your oral routine!

There are a number of benefits to opting for a good mouthwash – here are a few of them:

Fresh breath. Halitosis is a curse and one of the biggest and best benefits of mouthwash is that it (temporarily at least) reduces bad breath. It can also kill the bacteria that can cause bad breath so reaching for the mouthwash means you can make sure you’re never the person everyone shies away from when they open their mouth in public.

Particle removal. You can use mouthwash after brushing – we all know that – but did you know that it can also be very useful before you put brush to tooth? Mouthwash is a great way to rinse any stray particles out of your mouth before you start the brushing cycle. The result is that both brushing and flossing can be much more effective.

Plaque defence. There are lots of different types of mouthwashes out there but some of them can be instrumental in stopping nasty plaque building up in between your teeth and coating gums in between your daily brushing sessions. Swilling mouthwash can help prevent new plaque forming but unfortunately it won’t get rid of any that already exists – you’ll need to be committed to brushing and flossing to make sure that your teeth and gums are plaque and problem free.

Stopping cavities. Cavities are the one thing we all want to avoid when it comes to great oral health and mouthwash can play a role in this. Using it regularly after you have brushed and flossed can lower the chances of cavities forming and if you choose a mouthwash that contains fluoride then this effect is multiplied – as well as being a great way to strengthen your tooth enamel too. Not all mouthwashes have fluoride in them so be sure to check before you buy.

Combining brushing and flossing with mouthwash is a great way to make sure you have a beautiful, fresh smelling mouth at all times. If you want to know the best way to use mouthwash then have a chat with your dentist to work out the best strategy for you.
