Why veneers are not just for the red carpet

What’s the first thing we notice about celebrities on the red carpet these days? While we might love their outfits or be wowed by their shoes, it’s always that beaming, perfect smile that makes the biggest impression. You might have thought that getting a similarly starry smile was out of reach for the average person, but that’s no longer the case. Many celebrities achieve their dazzling grins thanks to veneers – and nowadays these are available to everyone.

What are veneers?

Essentially, they are an outer layer that sits over the teeth, covering up problems such as staining or damage and resulting in a straight, white smile. Durable material (usually porcelain) is used to form an outer shell for teeth with issues, crafted so that they look like regular teeth, only brighter and whiter.

When are veneers used?

Dental veneers have obvious benefits for anyone who has teeth that have become discoloured, chipped or cracked. However, they are also a faster alternative to waiting for braces as, while veneers won’t actually straighten your teeth, they can be used to give the impression of a straight set of teeth.

Who has them?

There are numerous celebrities who have had their dental issues well documented and yet mysteriously they now have a perfectly white, straight smile. Ben Affleck, for example, had his teeth treated on the Armageddon budget to the tune of $20,000. The Duchess of Cambridge’s dentist uses a new, innovative technique of crafting veneers with small imperfections so that they look more real.

How are veneers fitted?

It’s important that veneers are made for you so that they precisely fit your smile. Usually, a very thin layer of the enamel – which is the outermost layer on the teeth – is removed so that the veneer can be fitted on top. The veneers are bonded to your teeth with the help of dental cement, which is so strong that veneers can last up to 10 years. Looking after veneers is easy – just treat them as you would normal teeth.

Benefits of veneers

Cosmetic dentistry, such as veneers, is a great way to boost your confidence if you feel self conscious about imperfect teeth. If you feel like your social life is affected or you find it difficult to smile or chat without worrying that people are looking at your teeth, veneers are a simple way to correct the issue without any major work required. As they start from just £450 per tooth, they are cost effective too.
