Spring Cleaning Teeth

A Guide to Spring Cleaning Your Teeth

You’ve cleaned out the cupboards, thrown out old clothes, reinvigorated the garden and dusted the house from top to bottom ready for the warmer months, but that’s not where your spring clean should end. Now that you’ve finished preparing your home it’s time to move on to your mouth with these great tips for an oral spring clean.

Boost your oral routine

Cleaning your teeth is something that you are probably used to – it’s one of the first things most of us learn to do for ourselves as kids. However, are you doing it properly? You should be brushing your teeth for at least two minutes, at least twice a day – once before you go to sleep and at one other time. Adults should use a toothpaste that contains 1,350 parts per million (ppm) fluoride and regular flossing is essential, not just for removing any stuck food but also when it comes to removing plaque that can cause bad breath and gum disease.

Make the most of the fluoride

We know that we should use toothpaste containing fluoride but did you know that, for the fluoride in the toothpaste to take effect, you shouldn’t rinse with water as soon as you have brushed? Wait for a minute so that the fluoride isn’t diluted. The same goes for a fluoride rich mouthwash – don’t use it straight after brushing your teeth but choose another time, such as after lunch. Give yourself at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking after using the mouthwash to let the fluoride do its work.

Do you have the right technique?

Teeth cleaning is almost useless if you’re carelessly aiming a brush somewhere close to your teeth and gums. Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle so that the bristles are aimed at the point where gum and tooth meet. Use a brief back-and-forth motion to brush and make sure you cover the inside, outside and chewing surfaces of your teeth.

Change your consumption habits

Bad breath is a pretty embarrassing problem for anyone but preventing it isn’t just a case of good teeth cleaning but also what you put into your mouth too. Strong food and drink, such as onions or coffee can cause serious problems with bad breath but the main cause is smoking. Spring clean your habits to spring clean your breath.
