Do I need Dental Implants?

Dental implants offer a permanent solution for missing teeth.  If you’ve lost teeth through accident or decay, and your confidence in your smile has dropped as a result, then dental implants could make a big difference to your quality of life.

What is a dental implant?

Essentially, a dental implant is an artificial tooth root that can be used to hold a replacement tooth in place where the original has been removed. This genius piece of modern dentistry is shaped like a cylinder and is placed into a tooth socket where it is drilled in the exact location intended for the replacement tooth. The replacement tooth is then either screwed or tapped onto the implant to fill any gaps in your smile.

How are dental implants fitted?

The implant is normally drilled into place on the same day as an old broken or decayed tooth is being removed, in order to keep the process as simple and short as possible. During the fitting of the implant, the aim is to achieve close contact with the surrounding bone so that the implant sits snugly in the gap. Over time, further growth of bone into microscopic roughness on the implant surface helps to provide more stability and make the implant feel like a natural part of the mouth.

Who needs dental implants?

Implants are suited to anyone who has problems with missing teeth, whatever the reason that they are no longer there. It’s important that you’re in good health for dental implants to be fitted – there are a few conditions that could prevent you from being a candidate for implants, such as uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled gum disease, cancer or alcoholism as this can have an effect on whether the implant will fuse effectively to your jaw. It’s always a good idea to have a chat to your dentist about implants to find out whether they might be a good option for you.

Why might you need dental implants?

If you have missing teeth that are causing you problems with respect to eating or bite, talking or chewing then dental implants can help. Aesthetically, they can turn a gap toothed grin into a continuous smile and this can provide a huge boost to confidence too.
