What are teeth veneers?

Veneers ‘cover up’ the tooth’s surface to hide damage, defects, wear and stains. Unlike implants which replace teeth permanently and dentures temporarily, veneers work with the teeth you have to improve their appearance.

Many people don’t like their teeth for a variety of reasons. Birth defects like crooked teeth and sustained damage like chips are common reasons. Most of the time, people don’t like one or two of their teeth because they are nonsymmetric.

Teeth veneers are a long-term cosmetic dentistry solution to changing the appearance of teeth. They can cover up a number of cosmetic flaws with some of the most common being:

  • Cracked teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Yellow teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Poorly shaped or sized teeth

The best material for veneers in our opinion is porcelain. Porcelain is non-porous and so it doesn’t stain like tooth enamel does. Porcelain veneers are generally preferred to dental bonding because they offer a natural look and stay put for 10 to 15 years. They look just like natural teeth and retain the same white colour throughout their life.

Could I benefit from porcelain veneers?

Yes. If your teeth have cosmetic flaws you would like to fix, porcelain veneers could well provide that fix. Most cosmetic flaws can be remedied with teeth veneers, although every case is different, so we would like to see you before recommending them. Because they only cover the front surface of a tooth, veneers are not an alternative to crowns or caps. These cover the whole of the tooth to protect the tooth underneath and give it a new lease of life. Veneers are usually for aesthetic purposes only, although if a tooth is cracked a veneer could help sure it up. Veneers are not available on the NHS, unless they are needed to improve the health of your mouth.

The procedure itself is fast and non-intrusive. It usually takes no more than two visits. Your first visit will be a consultation appointment. Digital x-rays will be taken to examine your teeth and your dentist will discuss what you want. A digital wax mock-up will be created so you can see how your teeth will look. Of course, all consultations have no obligation and you are welcome to use your first appointment as a feeler.

We offer a wide range of cosmetic dentistry procedures. Porcelain veneers are one of the most effective at correcting tooth damage and imperfections.
