Teeth Whitening, Before and After

Teeth whitening – Why you should always use a dentist

Tooth whitening is one of the most popular ways of improving the appearance of your teeth and is a highly effective way of transforming your smile. But with so many whitening kits available online why should you visit your dentist instead of doing it yourself? In this blog, we’ll take a look at the reasons why tooth whitening from your dentist is always the right option to choose.

Why do teeth become discoloured?

Over time the things that we eat and drink can cause stains and discolouration to our teeth and cause them to become yellow in appearance. Tooth decay, fillings and the build-up of tartar can all contribute to the discolouration of your teeth but these can all be overcome with the help of tooth whitening.

How does teeth whitening work?

The most common approach to teeth whitening involves the use of hydrogen peroxide, a type of bleach, which effectively bleach the outer surface of your teeth to make them visually whiter. Teeth whitening kits from dentists will typically contain between 0.1% and 6% hydrogen peroxide while those bought online or from shops are limited to under 0.1%.

There are a lot of teeth whitening kits available online which exceed the recommended safe limits and can cause disastrous, damaging and health-threatening problems. A lot of the kits produced online are unregulated and contain ingredients that could cause irreversible damage to your teeth.

Home whitening kits from your dentist

Unlike the kits available in shops and online, a home whitening kit is only available from your dentist following a dental examination and assessment of your mouth, gums and teeth. Only when your dentist is happy with the results of the exam will they provide you with a home whitening kit.

Your dentist will create a mould of your teeth in order to create a custom-made whitening tray to perfectly fit your mouth. You will be provided with a whitening gel and shown how to apply this using the trays so that you can safely whiten your teeth at home. This approach provides a gradual way to whiten your teeth while providing long-lasting results.

In clinic whitening

An alternative to the home whitening kit is the in-clinic tooth whitening. During the in-clinic tooth whitening process, your dentist will use a special light-activated gel to gently brighten your teeth, break up stains and remove discolouration. With results delivered in less than an hour, this treatment option is the perfect choice for anyone who doesn’t want to wait to see results.

What results will I see?

For most people teeth whitening will visibly lighten their teeth by several shades and their dentist will be able to provide advice on what results are possible. While there is a range of natural shades possible you will also have the option of going even lighter than this to create a true Hollywood style smile.

How expensive is teeth whitening?

This really does depend on how many treatments you need and the current condition of your teeth. While our home whitening kits and in clinic whitening is more expensive than those available in the shop or online, the advantage is that all treatments are carried out with the guidance of a trained professional using tightly regulated ingredients. If you want professional results that won’t damage your health then you really do need to visit your dentist.
